Stubborn muscle pain and chronic tightness usually mean your tissue has lost its ability to release on its own. The pattern is familiar: pain in the same spot for months, tightness that returns within hours, and recovery that feels stuck. Cupping addresses these patterns by lifting the tissue with negative pressure, breaking up adhesions, and restoring circulation to areas where blood flow has slowed.
Chronic back pain, shoulder tightness, or neck stiffness
Slow recovery from training, injury, or repetitive strain
Sciatica, leg heaviness, or stagnant circulation in specific zones
Tension that builds in the body
Most patients notice the benefits of cupping therapy in the first session. Pain patterns that have lingered for months often shift when fascia and muscle tissue receive direct decompression through cupping for pain relief.

Cupping Benefits: Physical, Emotional, and Energetic Shifts
Benefit 1
Releases Deep Muscle Tension
The suction pulls muscle fibres and fascia apart, releasing the adhesions that build up from repetitive strain, injury, or stress. Areas that feel knotted, dense, or stuck respond especially well. Most patients feel the release immediately during the session.

Benefit 2
Improves Circulation and Recovery
Cupping draws fresh blood into areas where circulation has slowed. This accelerates the body's recovery process, reduces inflammation, and supports tissue healing. Athletes and people in physical jobs use cupping to recover faster between training sessions or workdays.
Benefit 3
Relaxes the Nervous System
The slow, sustained pressure activates the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting your body out of stress mode. This is why most patients feel deeply relaxed during and after a session. Sleep quality and the immune system often improve within the first few visits.

What to Expect at Your Cupping Session
Your first cupping session at Zen Quest Wellness runs 60 minutes and follows a structured 3-step process. You start with a brief intake conversation where your practitioner discusses your concerns, medical history, and treatment goals. Your practitioner then assesses the areas of tension and selects between fire cupping or dry cupping based on your needs and clinical pattern.

Cupping Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is cupping painful?
Most patients find cupping comfortable, though the sensation is strong. You will feel a deep pulling or pressure as the suction lifts your tissue, which many people describe as a productive release.
Your practitioner adjusts the suction strength based on your tolerance and the treatment area. Communicate immediately if anything feels sharp, and your practitioner will adjust the cup placement or suction level.
How long do cupping marks last?
Cupping marks typically fade within 3 to 7 days, though deeper marks can last up to 2 weeks. The marks reflect stagnant blood that the cupping pulled to the surface and indicate where your circulation needs support.
Lighter marks fade faster, and frequency reduces with regular treatment. Wear loose, breathable clothing for the first day after your session for comfort.
Is cupping covered by insurance or ICBC?
Yes. ICBC and most extended health plans in BC cover cupping when performed by a registered TCM practitioner, with annual limits typically ranging from $300 to $1,000 depending on your plan.
Zen Quest Wellness offers direct billing through TELUS Health eClaims, which covers the majority of major Canadian insurers. In some cases, your insurer may require you to pay at the time of your appointment and claim reimbursement directly (this is determined by your individual policy, not by the clinic).
Note that GreenShield is not currently supported through our direct billing system. If you are unsure whether your plan qualifies for direct billing or would like us to check your coverage before your appointment, give us a call or stop by the clinic and we will confirm it for you.
How often should you get cupping therapy?
Treatment frequency depends on your goal and clinical pattern. For chronic pain or stubborn tension, most patients start with weekly sessions for 3 to 5 weeks, then move to bi-weekly or monthly maintenance.
For athletic recovery, cupping is used acutely after training or competition. Your practitioner will create a specific treatment plan after your first session at the clinic.
Can cupping help with back and neck pain?
Yes, cupping is widely used for back pain, neck stiffness, shoulder tension, and lower back tightness. The suction releases fascial adhesions, increases blood flow to the affected area, and decompresses muscle tissue locked in chronic patterns.
Many patients notice relief after the first session, with cumulative improvement across a treatment series. Sciatica and referred pain patterns also respond well.
What is the difference between fire and dry cupping?
Fire cupping uses glass cups briefly heated with a flame before placement, creating suction as the air cools. Dry cupping uses silicone or plastic cups with a manual pump.
Fire cupping typically delivers stronger, warmer suction and is preferred for deep, chronic patterns. Dry cupping offers adjustable, milder suction and works well for first-time patients or sensitive treatment areas.
What should I do after a cupping session?
Stay hydrated, avoid intense workouts for 24 hours, and keep the treatment area warm. Skip cold showers, ice baths, and air conditioning directly on the skin for the rest of the day.
Eating a warm, nourishing meal supports the body's response to treatment. Most patients feel a mix of relaxation and renewed energy within a few hours after a session.
How much does a one-hour cupping treatment cost?
At Zen Quest Wellness, your initial cupping assessment and treatment session (60 minutes) is $150, and follow-up sessions (~50 minutes) are about $135. This depends on the practitioner and the treatment length.

Who should avoid cupping therapy?
Cupping is contraindicated for people with certain blood disorders, active skin infections in the treatment area, severe varicose veins at the placement site, or recent surgical incisions.
Pregnant patients should consult with their practitioner before booking a session. If you are taking blood thinners, mention it during your intake. Your practitioner will review your medical history before any cupping is performed.
What is your cancellation policy?
We have a 24-hour cancellation policy to keep our practitioners' schedules open and available for the rest of our beloved patients.
