Most clients see noticeable changes in skin tone and fine lines after 4 to 6 sessions. The recommended initial series is 10 to 12 sessions, scheduled 1 to 2 times per week.
After that, monthly maintenance sessions help preserve results. Your acupuncturist recommends a schedule based on your skin type and goals at your first session.
Is facial acupuncture covered by insurance?
Yes. Most extended health plans in BC cover facial acupuncture when performed by a registered TCM practitioner, with annual limits typically ranging from $300 to $1,000 depending on your plan.
Zen Quest Wellness offers direct billing through TELUS Health eClaims, which covers the majority of major Canadian insurers. In some cases, your insurer may require you to pay at the time of your appointment and claim reimbursement directly — this is determined by your individual policy, not by the clinic.
Note that GreenShield is not currently supported through our direct billing system. If you are unsure whether your plan qualifies for direct billing or would like us to check your coverage before your appointment, give us a call or stop by the clinic and we will confirm it for you.
Are there side effects from facial cosmetic acupuncture?
Although it's not essentially a side effect, the most common side effect is minor bruising or redness at one or two needle sites, which fades within 1 to 3 days. Rare side effects include brief lightheadedness during or after a session.
All practitioners at Zen Quest Wellness are CCHPBC-registered acupuncturists and use only sterile single-use needles. Tell your acupuncturist about any bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medications before your first session.
Mild warmth, heaviness, or tingling at the needle site is common and signals that the body is responding. Sharp or lasting discomfort is not a typical sensation. Your practitioner adjusts immediately if anything feels uncomfortable.
Is facial cosmetic acupuncture painful?
Most clients describe facial acupuncture as painless or only mildly sensitive at certain points (feels like mini mosquito bites). The needles used for facial work are hair-thin and much smaller than needles used for blood draws or injections.
Some points near the forehead or jaw may give a brief pinch on insertion, and the sensation usually fades within seconds. Many clients fall asleep during the 20 to 30-minute retention phase.

How long do facial acupuncture results last?
Results from a 10 to 12 session initial series typically last 3 to 6 months with monthly maintenance sessions. Without maintenance, visible changes gradually fade over 6 to 12 months as the stimulation effect tapers.
Sleep, nutrition, sun exposure, and skincare routine all affect how long results last. Most clients continue with monthly sessions to keep results visible.
